Christina Desmond: History & More

Christina Desmond and Louise Creaven created a little slice of history in Cork on Friday night. The first-ever all-Irish title fight on the female side of the sport. It was Desmond who left the ring as the BUI Irish super-lightweight champion courtesy of unanimous scorecards of 99-92, 99-91, and 99-91.

“I was very happy with the fight on Friday night,” Desmond told FightPost. “It was a tough competitive fight from start to finish against a good, hard opponent. I felt I boxed well and I was strong and ready for it. It was a huge opportunity for myself and Louise to box in the first Irish title fight. It was even more special to have it at home in Cork, and to get the win was incredible.”

The 30-year-old southpaw will make an incredibly quick turnaround when she heads to Spain to fight Clara Lopez for the vacant European super-lightweight title on the 24th October. “I am uninjured and unmarked from the last fight. I am happy being active, and it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. It’s not every day something like that comes around. I am fit and strong at the moment, and training is going well, so I’ll try to keep it up.”

The recent retirement of Katie Taylor has thrown the super-lightweight division wide open. Vacant titles and more opportunities for the 140-pound ranks. Desmond, who claimed nineteen National titles in her amateur days, is now unbeaten in six fights as a professional and is hoping to be in the world title mix at some point in 2027, but for now, is just focusing on her fight with Lopez. “A world title shot is every professional boxer’s dream,” Desmond says. “That’s what we all aim for. I am satisfied with my new weight. My next fight is my main focus right now, and I’ll think about everything else after that.”
