Tiah-Mai Ayton vs. Ellie Hellewell Clash For The Commonwealth Featherweight Title At The York Hall In August

The blue-chip prospect Tiah-Mai Ayton gets her first title opportunity in the pro ranks when she fights Ellie Hellewell for the Commonwealth featherweight title at the York Hall on August 22nd.

The highly-touted Ayton turned professional last year after an unbeaten twenty-one-fight amateur career, and has impressed immensely in her six fights to date. Only Catherine Tacone Ramos has lasted the distance. Ayton is coming off a 4th round stoppage over Stevi Levy in May. Levy was stopped for the first time in her career. The fight against Hellewell will be her first ten-rounder.

Hellewell (7-1-1) is a step up for the surging Ayton. The 26-year-old has only lost to the British and Commonwealth champion Tysie Gallagher, and carries ambitions of her own. That defeat to Gallagher in 2025 would have taught her plenty, and she has gone the ten-round distance twice in her career. Hellewell also holds a win over Levy, a points victory last March. Hellewell started well against Gallagher, before losing on points to the former world title challenger. The fight against Ayton, presents Hellewell an opportunity where she has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Ayton has done nothing wrong in those six fights, and a title opportunity was always likely to be sooner rather than later. It was always going to be somewhat problematic in holding her back. The 19-year-old looks destined to win major titles, but Hellewell will tell us a lot about the potential ceiling of Ayton. Hellewell is a good fighter in her own right, and it is a good, solid piece of matchmaking. Hellewell has a chance to change the trajectory of her career. Ayton will see it as another step forward in hers.

Many are proclaiming Ayton as the future of women’s boxing. The Commonwealth title could be the first of many; Ayton is a fighter in a hurry. In May, the unbeaten fighter told me when she thinks she might be fighting for a world title. “I wouldn’t mind the end of this year or the start of next year. I’ll be ready by then.” Ayton will be keen to show that it is a statement of reality.
