Top Tier Performance: Shona Whitwell Stops Victoria Lomax
Shona Whitwell showed her class on Sunday afternoon in Brentwood when she impressively stopped Victoria Lomax in four one-sided rounds on the latest Top Tier Promotions show. The Malaga-based Lomax (3-5) promised plenty, but in truth, she looked out of her depth against the classy former elite Team GB amateur.
Whitwell (4-0) dominated behind her southpaw jab, and she looked a class above her game opponent. Lomax was willing and aggressive. But somewhat limited. The unbeaten hopeful seemingly couldn’t miss with her punches, and she didn’t get out of first gear in sweeping the opening few rounds. Whitwell was flowing without too much effort and looked to be relishing fighting an opponent who came with ambition rather than just to survive.
The 28-year-old found the finish in the 4th round when Whitwell started to increase the pressure on her opponent. A body shot dropped Lomax to her knees, and she never looked like getting up. The referee waved it off at the 1:14 mark. Whitwell moves to 4-0 and records her third stoppage victory in a row. It was another performance that highlighted her obvious potential.
It will be interesting to see where Whitwell goes from here. Do they roll the dice or throw her straight into 50/50 fights? Even after just a handful of fights, the unbeaten super-featherweight prospect looks ready for titles. There are some good options domestically. The 130-pound ranks are pretty stacked. Jade Pearce recently won the Commonwealth title, and a fight with Whitwell would tick many boxes. It might be a fight or two down the line, but a big domestic showdown between Pearce and Whitwell would be of much intrigue, especially if there was a British title on the line.
Harli Whitwell, the younger sister of Shona, is scheduled to return in October, and both siblings could be on the same Top Tier show. Shona Whitwell will probably look for another step-up. With a long line of decent British fighters to choose from, hopefully, that is the route they choose rather than import fighters from abroad who don’t really offer much in return.
On the evidence of her performance, Whitwell will be winning major titles sooner rather than later.
