Ellie Scotney: A New Beginning
For Ellie Scotney, a new journey is about to begin.
Scotney completed the full set of super-bantamweight world titles last month in some style. It had been a long time coming for the Catford fighter. A brutal back-and-forth war with the incredibly tough Mexican Mayelli Flores. It was a hard-earned victory. One of the greatest female fights of the modern era. But it was Scotney who prevailed on points. Unanimous scorecards of 100-90, 97-93, and 98-92 gave Scotney her undisputed moment. The youngest ever British undisputed champion in the four-belt era.
It was an absolute pleasure to be at the Olympia in London for that fight. Two fighters who gave everything, and a little bit more, for their craft. A fight that was everything good about the female side of the sport.
The words were of the noncommittal variety at the post-fight press conference. Scotney wanted to enjoy her moment. The 28-year-old had finally gone undisputed. She wanted, and deserved, time to consider her next move. Scotney didn’t want to immediately let go of something that had long been a dream of hers.
Scotney has now made that move and left the super-bantamweight ranks behind. The WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO baubles officially vacated. Scotney is now targeting the featherweight division. A world title opportunity is already fast-approaching.
Next month, Tiara Brown will defend her WBC world featherweight title against her fellow American Hannah Rap in Orlando, Florida. The WBC have ordered that the winner of that fight must defend the title against Scotney. The WBC will update their rankings next month. Scotney will be ranked and eligible to fight for the WBC world featherweight title. The odds suggest Brown will win. A showdown between Brown and Scotney is one of much intrigue.
Scotney will start her new beginning later this year. One division has been conquered. No vacant titles. Nothing given, only earned. Scotney will now target doing the exact same thing at featherweight.
