Rhiannon Dixon Moves to 5-0

Rhiannon Dixon Moves to 5-0

Any unbeaten prospect needs fights that elevate and educate. Rhiannon Dixon had the perfect next step in her career tonight in Bilbao.

The previously unbeaten and former Olympian Moroccan Mahjouba Oubtil set many problems, but Dixon was far too much for her in Spain.

Dixon prevailed by a fully deserved unanimous decision, initially announced as a split-decision, by scores of 57-54, 58-53 & 60-52. The scores look a little off, I could only give the awkward Oubtil a share of the 5th round, although I could see how Oubtil could have been given that round but nothing else. Dixon was harshly deducted a point in the 3rd for apparent use of her head.

Dixon had her opponent over in the 3rd and the 6th, and was denied a third knockdown when the referee, who had a strange evening to say the least, somehow missed a body shot that put Oubtil over in the 4th round.

Oubtil brought plenty of ambition, and gave the Warrington lightweight prospect plenty to think about on her first fight on foreign soil. You don’t learn unless you are set problems. Dixon would have taken much away from tonight’s fight. There is still a lack of experience to bridge, with no amateur career behind her just a handful of White-Collar fights to her name. Tonight will help in many ways.

Dixon gradually got herself more into range as the fight progressed. Her lead right hand was her route to victory all night long, and there was good work to the body throughout, that should have had more reward from the referee.

At 27, there is no rush for the Anthony Crolla trained prospect. A few more fights of a similar nature will serve her ongoing apprenticeship just nicely, before the search for titles begins in earnest next year.
