Terri Harper Returns With A Win
There were tears tonight in Nottingham, some were of joy, most were of relief, but Terri Harper is back up and running in her new division.
The win over Argentina’s Yamila Abellaneda was for the WBA Intercontinental lightweight title, but it wasn’t a night about titles. Sometimes it’s about so much more.
Harper won with comfort but there were visible mental demons that might not yet be fully extinguished. The fragility is understandable after losing her world titles in such devastating fashion. Tonight was a new beginning in many ways. Harper still has the look of a fighter who still needs some level of protection going forward.
The cut over her left eye, a result of an accidental head clash, will delay her return, but the points win will serve many purposes. Abellaneda was the perfect opponent, good enough to extend but not too threatening. Harper needed that type of opponent. That type of fight.
Harper will face tougher tests, but tonight can be considered a success albeit one with some degree of caution.
