Sandy Ryan: “You’ll believe in me after this fight.”

Sandy Ryan: “You’ll believe in me after this fight.”

Even for a red-hot prospect entering world level after just three professional fights would you leave you thinking it was too much too soon. But for Sandy Ryan, and even in her side of the sport where the movement is faster than elsewhere, she could quite easily have pushed harder. Probably much harder.

Ryan never competed in an Olympic Games, a fact of near criminality, but her entry into world title contention and beyond looks almost guaranteed. The former amateur star could very well be the best prospect in the sport. And she is a fighter in a hurry.

Erica Farias comes to Nottingham on Saturday with world-title credentials. Farias has only been beaten by the elite in the sport. But a Ryan victory is practically guaranteed by many, it’s how and when she wins and not if. Talk of Chantelle Cameron and unified world titles doesn’t look out of place. A win on Saturday, Ryan will target Cameron with renewed vigour. Don’t be surprised if that fight happens this year.

Ryan has confidence that borders on arrogance, she is a fighter who doesn’t lack for self-belief as her words at the post-fight press conference would indicate:

“I believe in myself and my team believes in me, you’ll believe in me after this fight. I’m just ready for anybody.” There is an edge about Ryan that is often the difference between winning and losing, but in her case, it will help propel her to the top of her sport.

Ryan is incredibly ambitious and is unlikely to be satisfied with just winning a version of a world title. The ambitions go much higher, undisputed and at multiple weights will be on the menu as the years and her career advance.

“I want to win a world title at two or three weights, and I believe I can do it as well.”

There is a sense that there is something in the air with Ryan. A potential star and someone who can elevate her sport to even greater heights. Ryan has the look of a fighter who is born for the big stage. Farias is likely to find out on Saturday night that despite the elite competition she has already faced Ryan might be something she hasn’t yet seen. Ryan says she is ready for anybody. She might be right.
