Mitchell Stuns Courtenay
Make no mistake, Jamie Mitchell beat Shannon Courtenay to claim the vacant WBA bantamweight title tonight in Liverpool.
The ridiculously close scorecards of 95-95,97-93, 96-94 came very close to robbing the American of a thoroughly deserved victory.
The fight wasn’t even close. If you are kind, Courtenay might have edged the 2nd round, she had a good 8th round where the momentum of the fight suddenly changed, if only briefly. But those two rounds aside, Mitchell well won everything else.
The tightness of the cards yet again reflect the problems of the ‘away’ fighter getting a decision in a British ring. This wasn’t a fight about being subjective, it was a fight that Mitchell won beyond any doubt, and they very nearly took it away from her. The fact that the right fighter had her hand raised, excuses nothing.
Courtenay lost her title on the scales yesterday and her nightmare week extended into the ring tonight. Her claims that she won the fight are plainly absurd.
The defeated fighter will no doubt get her rematch, another tiresome ritual that needs stamping out and quickly. If the ‘away’ fighter somehow overcomes many obstacles, they are more or less forced to have to do it all over again. To get an opportunity you have to give more back.
