FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Conor McGregor
By Dan McConnell
The month of January for the UFC is usually a quiet one. With high-star power usually saved to the mid-late period of the year and the month generally a quiet one for sport.
However, at UFC 246, the UFC kicked off the new year with a huge event in Las Vegas with the return of ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.
On the card we seen five decision victories in a row on the pre-lims. The action fully kicked into life on the main card with three submissions, one decision and one famous knockout victory that will live long in the memory!
Brian Kelleher, Carlos Diego Ferreira, Drew Dober and Roxanne Modafferi who all impressed. Modafferi’s incredible decision victory over the heavily tipped undefeated ‘The Future’ Maycee Barber, deserves a special mention.
However, there really was only one fighter who could take away this week’s award.
Conor McGegor impressively dispatched Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone inside 40 seconds in the very first round of their 170-pound bout this past Saturday night.
Cerrone is a man who holds multiple records for the most amount of UFC wins and knockout victories but couldn’t overcome his latest tough test.
All the question marks and pressure where on the Irishman and boy did ‘The Notorious’ deliver with a nation on his back.
With his recent troubles in his personal life, what a way to respond to his critics. A TKO finish via the unorthodox use of shoulder strikers, followed by a pin-point head kick and flurry of punches and ended things inside the octagon.
In his post-fight interview ‘The Notorious’ spoke of his desire and hungover of regaining his love for the sport and laser-focus on the task at hand.
Congratulations Conor McGregor, you are this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week!
