Russian Redemption for the English in Moscow
By James Lee
This Saturday, two English fighters will look to claim redemption in the capital of Russia, to maybe save their spots amongst the sport’s best.
Danny Roberts and Davey Grant have been in the UFC for multiple years now, but arguably face their biggest trouble in their UFC careers.
Especially Grant, who is coming off the back of two losses in a row and a 59 second defeat to Manny Bermudez in Hamburg last year.
Since his stint on TUF 16, the Englishman has yet to establish himself as a consistent fighter, both inside and outside the octagon; fighting just four times in six years.
But now is the time he must make it count, or otherwise his spot is likely over.
He will open the card against Grigorii Popov, who lost his UFC debut to former title contender Eddie Wineland in June. Despite Popov being unsuccessful, he is still a massive threat to Durham’s Davey Grant who is a 7/4 underdog.
In the case of Danny Roberts, his position is likely secure, but a loss could make him vulnerable due to the way his losses have come.
Roberts guarantees excitement that the UFC crave, but at some point, they begin to take into consideration a realistic chance of reaching gold or sustaining themselves as a contender.
He has that potential, but similarly to Grant, he must consistently prove it, rather than have us believe it.
His talent was clear since he joined the UFC from Cage Warriors and he has had notable wins in his nine-fight UFC career so far.
His finishes over Oliver Enkamp and Bobby Nash and similarly, his wars in England with Mike Perry and Claudio Silva are memorable. He must do the same in Moscow this weekend, but with a win.
His last fight was particularly the most disappointing of his career, being a first-round knockout loss to Michel Pereira in New York.
Now on Saturday, he faces 24-year-old Zelim Imadaev in enemy territory.
A fight that puts his back against the wall, but he has all the talent to get it done.
Moscow presents a big opportunity for both English fighters away from home and one they must take.
