Miocic Retains The UFC Heavyweight Title
Daniel Cormier at times looked certain to repeat, but Stipe Miocic got his revenge in a brutal main event at UFC 241.
After a mostly torrid first 3 rounds Miocic switched his attack to the body in the 4th, and the rewards were almost immediate.
Cormier had a strong dominant opening round, slamming his opponent down after having big success on the feet.
Miocic took some thudding shots, Cormier probably concentrated too much on knocking Miocic out. Cormier relentlessly marched forward, hands down and appeared on his way to retaining his title.
Miocic looked exhausted at the end of the 3rd, and despite having his own success the turnaround we saw in the 4th, looked remote from what we had previously seen.
But the body shots did the trick, the tide turned and Cormier faded rapidly. More shots to the body followed, Cormier visibily showed the pain then Miocic hurt him to the head and Cormier crumbled to the canvas, and his heavyweight title reign was over at the 4:09 mark of the 4th round.
Cormier respectful as ever praised the new champion, and almost certainly his fabulous career is now at an end.
Miocic got what he wanted, but waiting in the wings is an opponent who also wants to right the wrongs of a previous fight.
Francis Ngannou is the likely reward for winning this fight, but for now Miocic proved his point and quite rightly can claim to be the best heavyweight we have ever seen.
