Jordan Gill Shines in the Biggest Fight of his Career so Far!
By Jack Price @PriceyJ97
Talented featherweight Jordan Gill (23-0, 7 KO’s) had the opportunity to show the British boxing fans what he’s about last night when he took on Emmanuel Dominguez (24-8-2, 16 KO’s) in what was expected to be the biggest and toughest test of his career so far. The contest was the main event on Sky Sports Nxtgen show so all eyes were on the youngster; and boy did he make the most of it!
It was a flawless performance from the slick stylist from Chatteris as he took out the tough Mexican in just three rounds, becoming only the second man to stop him and winning the vacant WBA International featherweight title.
We’ve always known Gill’s got the skill and ability but there’s always been question marks over the power in his punch, however tonight he had it all. His precision punching and head movement were on point as usual but he was also stinging Dominguez with every single shot he threw.
Gill dominated from the off, showcased two explosive rounds and then took him out just over halfway through the third. It really was an eye-catching performance in front of his hometown fans.
The question now is what’s next for Gill? He’s only 24 years, but he’s been a pro since the age of 18 and has already racked up 23 wins. In my opinion he needs to take a big step up now as he’s clearly way too good for the level he’s been fighting at. It seems like Gill thinks it’s time for this too as he stated that he would like either veteran Spaniard Kiko Martinez or WBA champ Can Xu next.
Both of these would be decent steps up and he wins both with ease in my opinion. After a few fights at European to fringe-word level he should be ready to start looking at the big names in the division and that’s when things become very exciting!
Featherweight is one of the most stacked weight divisions in boxing right now with the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Josh Warrington, Oscar Valdez and Gary Russell Jr currently leading the way.
In a couple of years time, if he progresses how we are expecting him to, I believe Gill can be another great addition to the world mix at 126lb. The future looks very bright for the youngster right now!
