FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Israel Adesenya
By Kieran Cobley
This week’s MMA Fighter of the Week honours go to Israel Adesenya after his clinical striking display against Derek Brunson at UFC 230.
Adesenya went into the fight as a 1/3 favourite, and had been highly touted by Dana White who has said the 29-year-old New Zealander has a bright future ahead of him.
“Style Bender” managed to fend off Brunson’s superiors wrestling in the opening of the round, and in the stand up segments he put his kickboxing background into action, nailing Brunson with body kicks, head kicks and punches.
One of these punches caused Brunson to lower his level, and this is when he was caught and knocked down by Adesanya’s brutal knee strike.
Brunson managed to get up from this but was dropped twice again, forcing Herb Dean to step in to stop the fight.
Adesanya now has a record of 15-0, with 13 of his wins coming via KO, and his next fight will inevitably be a title eliminator, if not, a title shot.
Honourable mentions go to Daniel Cormier who goes 22-1, with his second round submission victory putting him in the UFC history books as the first double champ to ever defend one of their titles, and Jacare Souza, who came from behind to knock out Chris Weidman in the third round of their epic fight.
