Geo’s Weekly Round-Up
By Geo Youngson
Billy Joe Saunders
It’s seems like it’s been a pretty terrible week for WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders.
First of all he was fined £100,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for bringing the sport into disrepute. It was over a video that surfaced online where the boxer offered a homeless woman £150 worth of drugs for sex then when she refuse he told her to hit a passer by. He described the incident as ‘banter gone wrong’.
Then news came out that he had failed a drug test administered by VADA (voluntary anti-doping agency). He tested positive for a Oxilofrine, which it is believed came from a common nasal spray. The interesting thing is that although Oxilofrine is banned by VADA, it is not banned out of competition by either WADA (World Anti-doping Agency) or UKAD (United Kingdom Anti Doping) and the failed test will probably be put down to a tainted supplements and have no effect on his career.
What’s funny about this situation though is the comments that Saunders made about the Canelo Alvarez drug test failures, claiming that he should get a life ban. The Alvarez situation was eventually put down to tainted meat and he was exonerated.
EDDIE ALVAREZ TO ONE?
The rumour seems to be that Eddie Alvarez is close to signing a deal with the Asian based One FC. Its seems that as well as One, Eddie has offers from the UFC and Bellator and apparently KSW have thrown their hats in the ring although it’s unclear whether the could afford him.
The ball is in Eddie’s court and he will do what’s best for him.
Bad news concerning boxer Victor Ortiz who has been charged with several counts of sexual assault including forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and forcible digital insertion. It comes from an incident in March of this year when a woman contacted police to saw she had been assaulted in her home and the investigation led back to Ortiz.
He has been released on $100,000 bail.
Victor Ortiz is probably most famous these days for his intentional headbutt on Floyd Mayweather Jr and his attempted apology where Mayweather hit him with a one two and knocked him out. Ortiz has been in trouble with the police before but nothing this serious. Innocent until proven guilty though so we will wait and see.
I don’t think I’ve done one of these news roundups and not had Conor be in it for one reason or another. This time it’s for the very best of reasons.
A distraught mother had tweeted Conor McGregor asking for a possible donation to help her child. A few minutes later he replied.
Good for him and it doesn’t hurt to build up that good karma before going into battle.
ABDUL RAZAK ALHASSAN
Another story of sexual abuse this time involving rising UFC Welterweight Alhassan. He has been indicted on two counts of rape at an incident in March. He allegedly met two girl at his job as a bouncer and at the end of the night drove the drunk girls to one of their homes where he raped both of them. He is going to plead not guilty and like I said he’s innocent until proven guilty.
What’s interesting is that a judge changed his bail conditions to allow him to train and compete at UFC 228 in September. It’s unknown if the UFC knew about this before hand and I wonder what their reaction will be.
MIKE RUSSELL AND NOAH
On thing to come out of the Nurmagomedov/McGregor press conference is the more mainstream attention being given to top MMA manager and alleged deadbeat dad Ali Abdelaziz.
Investigative journalist Mike Russell has being covering the story of Abdelaziz and his terrorist link, his false background and absolute failure as a father but it seems like one comment from Conor has opened the story right up. Hopefully this will give Mike more opportunities to get his story out their, and maybe get Noah paid.
JON FIRES, CORMIER FIRES BACK
Jon Jones tried to goad Daniel Cormier on social media, trying to get in Daniel’s head and get himself a title fight. Jon went heel and Daniels response was fire.
