Paige Murney Outpoints Linzi Buczynskyj in Birmingham
Paige Murney ended her extended ring hiatus on Saturday night in Birmingham when she outpointed Linzi Buczynskyj over four good rounds. Murney lost a point in the 2nd round, which seemed somewhat harsh, but improved to 5-0 courtesy of a 38-37 scorecard. FightPost had it a little wider at 39-36.
Murney hadn’t fought since March 2024, and she looked intent on making up for lost time when she came flying out of the blocks. That fast, aggressive start had the tough Buczynskyj under pressure from the opening seconds, but the 38-year-old showed plenty of ambition herself and made her opponent pay at times for being a little too aggressive. Murney got caught too easily at times, but the 31-year-old put on a display that promises plenty. A performance like that on a Matchroom card live on DAZN will only help elevate her profile.
Buczynskyj (6-13) has mixed in good company throughout her career, and despite her somewhat unflattering resume, is a decent test for any up-and-coming hopeful. But I thought Murney impressed immensely in defeating her, and the scorecard looked a little harsh on her. The point deduction and a few defensive flaws aside, I thought the Leicester fighter won every round clearly.
Murney injured her ACL after her last fight over two years ago. The injury required surgery and rehabilitation, but the Dave Allen-managed fighter clearly has a lot of potential. The unbeaten prospect won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and looks to be a fighter to keep an eye on over the next eighteen months or so.
