Stevie Morgan: A New Beginning
It’s been an immensely frustrating period of late for Stevie Morgan. There was a few moments earlier this month in Bogota, Colombia when it was deeply worrying for her. Life-threatening even. But the American will look to post recent events behind her and move forward with her boxing career.
By now Morgan should have had firm fight news about challenging Stephanie Han for her WBA world lightweight title. Deadlines have come and gone for the WBA mandatory contender. Morgan had decided she had waited long enough and arranged to fight Jenny Tulcan in Colombia. But on her to the weigh-in, Morgan was robbed at gunpoint inside the vehicle she was travelling in. Understandably, Morgan decided not to go through with the fight. It was a terribly frightening few minutes in the life of the 37-year-old. But as they say, Morgan lives to fight another day.
That day will be October 31st. Morgan has rescheduled her fight with the unbeaten Tulcan. Morgan will look to get her career up and running again in the Dominican Republic. She will move up to super-lightweight for the fight with Tulcan (14-0) after seeing herself somewhat frozen out of the 135-pound world title picture.
With the recent retirement of Katie Taylor, Morgan sees an opportunity at 140 to force her way into the upper echelons of her new division. The super-lightweight ranks look wide open, and you sense Morgan will be highly ranked by the WBA if she gets past Tulcan next month. The WBA Gold 140-pound will be on the line at Sousa Beach.
The American isn’t ruling out future opportunities at lightweight, but the wind is seemingly blowing against her. Han will likely fight Caroline Dubois in a big unification showdown, meaning Han waiting even longer for her shot at lightweight gold. Especially, when Dubois and Alycia Baumgardner, if they both win their next fights, will almost certainly fight each other at some point in 2027. The decision to move up a weight division looks a smart one for Morgan.
