Gemma Richardson Lands Her First Title Opportunity
After just five fights in the professional ranks the former amateur star Gemma Richardson has secured her first title opportunity.
On the 31st October at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, Richardson (5-0) will fight the 35-year-old Carolyn Redmond (9-2) for the vacant WBO International super-lightweight title. Both fighters will be experiencing the championship ten-round distance for the very first time.
It was always going to be a case of when that Richardson would be in the titles picture. In five professional fights, Richardson has done little wrong and is coming off a comprehensive victory over the former two-time European champion Kirstie Bavington. Richardson took a dominant 60-54 points decision over Bavington in August on the latest MVP UK card. The unbeaten prospect got six good learning rounds in against the tough Bavington. It was a valuable twelve minutes that will serve her well going forward.
Redmond turned professional in 2019 has suffered two defeats in eleven pro fights to date. But Redmond is currently riding a three-fight win streak, and will surely relish the opportunity to test her skills against a fighter who is tipped to reach the very top of her sport.
