Christina Desmond: “It would be a dream to box on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s show.”

After a highly successful amateur career that included nineteen national titles, Christina Desmond turned professional last year. It’s been a highly encouraging start in her new world. Five fights. Five wins. The 30-year-old welterweight contender is showing real signs of replicating her previous amateur successes in the professional ranks.

“I am very happy with my professional career so far,” Desmond told FightPost. “It has been a whirlwind, and it is great. It’s a totally different ball game from the amateurs. But I like the change. I am improving with every fight in my opinion, and transitioning into the professional game nicely.”

Katie Taylor has finally been granted her dream farewell scenario. The final fight of her career will take place at the fabled Croke Park in Dublin. Every Irish fighter wants to be part of that show. Desmond is no different. There has been talk of Desmond fighting Louise Creaven on Taylor’s swan song.

“The talk of that fight was just put to me by my manager, Kevin Crowley,” Desmond says. “I am willing to fight anyone when the time is right. It would be great to be able to put an all-Irish female title fight on the card.”

“It would be a dream to box on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s show,” Desmond added. “It will be very tough to get on the show. There are plenty of very talented Irish females and males around now.”

Creaven was born in Ireland, but is now based in Australia, and has built up a solid-looking 5-2 resume. “I have never seen Louise box,” Desmond admitted. “I don’t know much about her, but I know she is competitive and well able.”

Taylor has been a vital component in the rise of women’s boxing over the last decade. She has paved the way for the modern era. Desmond knows what Taylor means to her craft. “Katie has grown the sport to a height that no other person will ever be able to do. She is a true hero and sporting legend, and I wish her the very best in her retirement.”

Christina Desmond is at the beginning of her professional career. Desmond is only five fights in, and the immediate future is all about learning before the inevitable move into title contention. “I plan on getting more experience, more rounds, and I’ll be ready and waiting when the opportunity for a title shot comes.”
