Meg Redstall: Beyond The Ropes

Meg Redstall: Beyond The Ropes

In many ways, Megan Redstall has been unlucky in recent times. Fights against Laura Pain, Emma Dolan, and Maiseyrose have been signed but not delivered. Fights that fell by the wayside at the eleventh hour.

The 24-year-old has needed resilience and plenty of patience. Redstall was due to face Courtney in January for the vacant Commonwealth bantamweight title. But in her very last spar, Courtney injured her hand, and it wasn’t third time lucky in her quest for a big domestic fight.

But Johnny Clark of Top Tier Promotions rescued the week for Redstall. The Kenyan
Consolata Musanga was drafted in on fight week. Redstall didn’t let her frustrations affect her performance, and she impressively won every round against Musanga to claim that vacant Commonwealth bauble.

Redstall will return in July, and at flyweight, to fight Maiseyrose Courtney (9-1) in an intriguing rescheduled contest. The vacant WBO International flyweight title is on the line. The winner moves a little closer to a world title opportunity or a potential fight with the likes of Jasmina Zapotoczna, Chloe Watson, or Nicola Hopewell.

Like many, Redstall has to chase her dreams alongside a demanding day job. Doing shift work as a paramedic is worked around. There are no complaints. The two sides of her life are navigated around. In simple terms, Redstall makes it work.

“I will reach the end goal of being a world champion, no matter how long it takes,” Redstall once told me. If she beats the talented Courtney, a world title opportunity could be within touching distance.

How quickly that comes will depend on what Gabriela Fundora does going forward. The undisputed world flyweight champion might decide to chase glory in another weight division. If she does, four world titles will suddenly become vacant. Redstall would surely be in the running if a victory does indeed come her way at the Brentwood Centre in July.

But if Fundora stays put, Redstall still has enough fights on home soil to satisfy her lofty ambitions. Jasmina Zapotoczna is the current European flyweight champion, and told FightPost that she would love to fight the winner of Redstall and Courtney. Chloe Watson and Nicola Hopewell have also expressed interest in fighting whoever emerges victorious later this summer. Megan Redstall isn’t short of options going forward.

Redstall (7-0-1) will not think of what lies until after her fight with Courtney. The once-beaten Courtney represents the toughest test to date for Redstall. Only Zapotoczna has beaten Courtney. It’s a tough fight for both. Both will enter their fight in July, knowing defeat is a distinct possibility.

But Redstall has always wanted fights that excite and challenge her. On that score, her wishes have finally been granted.
