Ginny Fuchs Finally Lands Her World Title Opportunity

It will be just short of two years since Ginny Fuchs last fought in July, but her extended ring hiatus will end that month with a long-awaited world title opportunity. Fuchs will finally challenge Adelaida Maria Ruiz for her WBC world super-flyweight title on July 18th at the National Orange Show Event Center, San Bernardino, California.

Ruiz won the vacant title in November with a points decision over the Canadian Alexas Kubicki. Ruiz (18-1-1) has only one defeat on her resume, and that was to the fighter she will face in July.

Fuchs (4-0) outpointed Ruiz in September 2024 by a split-decision. I had Fuchs winning that fight, and I couldn’t make any case whatsoever for the judge who saw it for Ruiz by a scorecard of 97-93. But the two remaining judges gave it to Fuchs. One even giving the former Olympian every round. The American suffered a gruesome thumb injury early in the fight but bravely fought through the pain barrier to record the biggest win of her career to date. Fuchs hasn’t fought since, a combination of rehabilitation on her injury plus a seismic slice of boxing politics. Fuchs has been ready to fight since September, but she has been kept waiting for her chance at Ruiz. But her period of frustration will finally end later this summer.

Ruiz has fought twice since losing her unbeaten record to her fellow American and will see the rematch as a chance for revenge. But Fuchs won without too much doubt in 2024, and that was with the handicap of navigating her through that debilitating thumb injury. Fuchs will fancy her chances of repeating her previous victory, this time with the added bonus of becoming a world champion.
