Skye Nicolson vs. Mariah Turner: Big Fight Preview & Prediction
Eddie Hearn takes his Matchroom product back to Australia on April 29th on a card headlined by Skye Nicolson taking on Mariah Turner at The Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Australia.
For Nicolson, the fight is a gateway to a possible shot at going undisputed at her new weight. But Turner can gatecrash the world title picture herself with an upset victory.
Nicolson is almost certainly just one fight away from having an opportunity at becoming a two-weight world champion. A victory over Turner and a world title chance at super-bantamweight should present itself. The only question is, will it be for undisputed status against Ellie Scotney or for a vacant title if, as expected, Scotney moves up to featherweight? The latter is a far more likely option for Nicolson.
Since losing her WBC world featherweight title to the American Tiara Brown last March, Nicolson has dropped down a division and has recorded three wins against varying degrees of competition. Stoppage victories over Carla Camila Campos Gonzales and Urvashi Singh were incredibly poor matchmaking. Neither of those carefully-selected opponents had any business sharing a ring with someone like Nicolson. It’s extremely difficult to justify such safety-first, no-risk fights like that. But a points victory over the highly-ranked Mexican Yuliahn Luna Avila in December was far more meaningful. As Nicolson said herself, it was her first proper fight since she dropped down a division after losing her WBC world featherweight title and her unbeaten record to the vocal American.
Mariah Turner has a background in Muay Thai and kickboxing, and since making the switch to boxing and turning professional in 2023, the Australian has built up a solid-looking 12-1 resume. Originally from New Zealand before settling in Australia, Turner has a decent record on paper, albeit against opponents at a much lower level than the former Olympian whom she will face for the WBC interim world super-bantamweight title. An early defeat to the talented Ellie Bouttell has been followed by seven straight wins, and she is coming off a ten-round points victory over the previously unbeaten Stephanie Lee Cutting. However, Skye Nicolson represents a significant step up in competition. But the 30-year-old has nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Despite the somewhat mixed competition of late, Nicolson has looked good at her new weight, and how it comes, another reign as a world champion would appear to be just a matter of time.
A distance fight looks more than probable. Nicolson has those two recent stoppages on her record, but they were against low-grade opposition. Turner looks to have a little more about her. If the challenger can keep the pressure on, keeping a high work rate, then it might get competitive. Turner can’t make the same mistake as many previous Nicolson opponents and just stand off from her. The Australian is very good at winning rounds with minimal effort. Her output is extremely low for a top-level fighter. But it works for her. Tiara Brown stayed on top of Nicolson and didn’t let her coast. I’m not convinced Nicolson is the same fighter when she is put under pressure, and that is surely the route to victory for Turner. If Nicolson is made to work hard in the early rounds, Turner might find enough success in the second half of the fight. But that’s easier said than done against Nicolson.
Nicolson is the betting favourite, with odds of around 1/10 in her favour, and I can’t really make a case for the upset. You can get 15/2 on Turner if you think she can replicate what Brown did in 2025. But that does appear to be on the remote side.
It will probably be a typical Skye Nicolson fight that will be one for the purists only. If Turner can stay close to her and make Nicolson dig a little deeper than normal, it might then become more of a crowd-pleasing affair. But that seems like wishful thinking. Nicolson will likely box on the outside and glide her way to a comfortable and wide points victory in a fight that will probably lack for drama or excitement.
