Beyond The Ropes: Harli Whitwell
Harli Whitwell should have enjoyed another little step in her boxing life. But not for the first time, an injury has held up her progress.
Whitwell should have had fight number six this past weekend. But a lingering knee issue put paid to her planned appearance on the latest Johnny Clark Top Tier show.
“I am really disappointed to have not boxed,” Whitwell told FightPost. “That’s now the second camp I have nearly completed, where I have had to then pull out due to injury in the last seven months, which is obviously very frustrating for any fighter that just wants to box. Especially as I was getting to a point in my career where I was getting title opportunities where I have had no choice but to withdraw myself from the fight. I know I’m not the only one, but it does make you feel really isolated in this sport.”

Whitwell is almost certainly one of the hottest prospects in the female ranks. Those five wins have brought her rave reviews. But injuries have stalled her progress somewhat.
“I haven’t had the best of luck with injuries in the last year of two,” Whitwell told me. “Firstly, I injured my shoulder, which has now made a full recovery. I previously injured my knee around June where I was unable to fight on a Top Tier show but I have now further torn my ACL just a few weeks before my scheduled fight last weekend. It is is the most restricting injury when it comes to training and fighting that I have sustained so far in my career. The injury is already healing very well but of course, I will need some help to get it back to how it was and being fight ready which we are looking into currently. So I’m not too sure what the exact recovery period will be like for me but I hope to be back fighting in 2025 as soon as I get all clear to do so.”
But time is on her side. At 24, her whole boxing future is still ahead of her.
“I guess the silver lining of this, like you said, I am young enough to make a full recovery and being so early in my career, I know I will pick up where I left off. As much as it’s not ideal and frustrating for me right now, I know it will all work out. I know plenty of other fighters that have gone through a similar injury as me, which gives me some hope.
“I’m lucky to have an amazing sponsor Moore Performance Ltd by my side who have been there to help with recovery from previous injuries and have helped provide advice, support and rehab for my current injury which will help me get back on track. I also have a really good group of sponsors, which help me financially while I recover. Many fighters have to adapt their training post injury and to avoid further injury, and I will be no different. I guess I have got to be extra careful going forward and make sure I keep on top of my rehab and strength and conditioning. My main priority is getting myself fit to fight again. So the goal has never changed, and once I have got myself sorted, I know these opportunities will arise again, and I will be back like I never left.”
Despite all the frustration of 2024, Harli Whitwell has still fought twice and made significant progress in her young boxing career. A fighter who is developing quite nicely. And one that is seemingly destined for the upper echelons of her craft. This year might not have turned out exactly how she hoped. But 2025 should be different. Already on the verge of titles. The next twelve months should bring her what her talents deserve. All she needs is a little luck.
