Nicola Hopewell: Waiting To Be Unleashed
If Nicola Hopewell had her way, she would be making her professional debut proper tonight in her hometown of Worksop. But very soon all the frustrations of the last few months will be a thing of the past. Hopewell will very soon be unleashed once more.
Early in the new year, the Worksop super-flyweight decided to leave the old for pastures new. And with her application for a licence to box under the auspices of the British Boxing Board of Control nearing its completion, Hopewell will very soon be good to go.
Through no fault of her own, the process has taken longer than expected. But just to be clear, there is no medical issue and her application has not been declined. Only a small minor non-medical detail that needs to be confirmed, is holding back the formal announcement. Trust me, it’s coming.
Hopewell 30, is a seriously talented prospect, and would not be out of place on any card. The all-female Boxxer card in September would be of much interest, and Boxxer would be well advised to consider her for that historic night in London.
The Worksop fighter has needed patience and plenty of it, but the time hasn’t been wasted. The relationship with the new team has been allowed to naturally grow. Hopewell is the fittest she has ever been, and the happiest also.
There will be some who will still question, resent even, her decision in January, but Hopewell wasn’t happy for many reasons, and desperately wanted to try her talents on a bigger stage. She has now given herself that opportunity. A fighter who wanted to have no regrets when her career is over, the painful decision was nevertheless the right one.
As the old quote says:
‘When you make the right decision, it doesn’t really matter what anyone else thinks.’
