UFC 272 Preview & Prediction: Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal

By Cathal Geeney

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will face off as the UFC 272 headliner in one of the greatest grudge matches of recent years.

The relationship of the former friends, training partners and housemates turned sour after the friction from Colby’s ‘heel’ persona became too much for the American Top Team gym and ended up with Colby leaving back in May of 2020.

The build up to this showdown has been filled with bitterness and has most likely taken a toll on both fighters. Fortunately, the time has now come to settle their differences in the octagon.

Although Colby and Jorge are top welterweights, they have both struggled recently. Covington has been defeated in two of his last three outings, while Masvidal has lost two on the bounce, most recently suffering his first knock out. And all four of these collective defeats have been at the hands of the current 170-pound king, Kamaru Usman. The dominance of Usman has made it difficult for any other contender to emerge in the welterweight division. Their respective form only serves to add to the pressure for both men on Saturday night.

Gamebred is known for his effective striking. The thirty-seven-year-old is light on his feet, has fast hands and can switch stances fluidly. Jorge will look to put together combinations and find a read on Colby early with his powerful hooks. While known for going the distance earlier in his career, Masvidal has managed to channel his aggression and power in the cage in recent times, having finished his opponent in each of his last five victories.

The challenge for Gamebred will be managing to impose his gameplan on the night. Colby Covington brings an incredible energy to the octagon. He is relentless in his approach, constantly putting his opponent on the backfoot with his constant striking, and then mixing in his wrestling to get the fight to the mat. Colby will be sure to test the takedown defence of Jorge early. Their mix of fighting styles, as well as all the bad blood between the competitors, should make this a fascinating main event.

This fight is sure to be fireworks. It is being billed by many as a classic striker versus grappler, and while there is an element of truth to this, it is important not to overlook the grappling of Masvidal and the striking of Colby. They are both more well-rounded than many think. I can see Masvidal coming out aggressive and doing a good job of defending the offensive grappling of Colby. But ultimately, I foresee the fluid mix of striking and grappling of Colby, combined with the incredible cardio, being too much for Masvidal. I expect Colby to end the rivalry with a dominant display, most likely picking up a convincing decision. #UFC272 #UFC
