Darren Tetley: This would show kids
they can turn their lives around

Darren Tetley is a shining example of how you can turn your life around – and he wants to continue the next step in that journey when he faces Samuel Antwi for the vacant English welterweight title on Friday’s massive #MTKFightNight.

Tetley (20-1, 9 KOs) takes on Antwi (12-1, 5 KOs) at the University of Bolton Stadium on Friday, live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.

It’s been a long road to the top for Bradford hero Tetley, and he has opened up on how much it would mean to him to become English champion after everything he has been through.

Tetley said: “I might even cry when I win this English title. To come from a council estate getting arrested as a teenager to then win an English title would be huge, and it would show young kids that they can turn their life around.

“Another bit of motivation is the fact that the English title is the only title my trainer Mick Marsden hasn’t had. He’s had them all, world titles, European titles, British titles, Central Area titles, so now I need to get him the English belt.

“If I do what I need to do and box how I need to in this fight, then Antwi won’t be able to be comfortable and box his fight. There’s no way on earth he will beat me. I believe I’ll break him down and if I don’t stop him, I’ll definitely win on points.

“All I want is good fights that people will want to watch and be interested in. On fight night you’re going to see what my last two fights on TV have been, Fight of the Year contenders.”

Elsewhere on Friday’s huge card, Sean McComb and Gavin Gwynne meet for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title, DP Carr defends his Southern Area super-featherweight title against Dean Dodge, Pierce O’Leary fights Irvin Magno, Mark McKeown takes on Brad Daws, Paddy Donovan goes up against Siar Ozgul, Elliot Whale faces Jamie Stewart, and Mohammed Sameer is back in action.
