Shannon Courtenay Returns On 4th December
Shannon Courtenay suffered her first professional defeat at the hands of Rachel Ball at Fight Camp in August.
Courtenay was dropped in the 1st round, a round she was dominating. She got over eager after appearing to hurt Ball. Courtenay went for the finish, but was dropped as she got careless looking for the quick win. That knockdown proved pivotal on the referees scorecard. Courtenay was on the wrong end of a 77-75 score, one punch resulted in a three-point swing.
Bitterly disputing the decision in the aftermath, Courtenay says the loss will make her stronger and will not define her. There were a lot of positives from the Ball fight despite the result. Courtenay recovered well from the knockdown and boxed well, not allowing the much taller Ball the space or time she needed.
Courtenay (5-1) returns on Friday on the undercard of the Billy Joe Saunders Martin Murray world title fight. The Polish fighter Dorata Norek (6-1) will welcome Courtenay back to the ring, and is on a two fight winning run.
A win against Norwek could set up a rematch with Ball early next year a fight Courtenay desperately wants.
