Ellie Scotney Shines In Peterborough
As women’s boxing continues to develop and grow, it will need new talent to emerge to keep the momentum going.
In Peterborough last night, we may have witnessed the beginning of a potential new star in her sport.
It’s been a long-time coming but finally the highly-touted Ellie Scotney made her professional debut.
Even though it was her first fight in the paid ranks, much was expected, and even though that expectation was high, she surpassed it.
Scotney gave her performance a 6/10, and if that is a true reflection of what is to come, it is a truly frightening prospect for her future opponents. Scotney won in dominant fashion, 60-53 was a true reflection of what we witnessed.
Bec Connolly was under no illusions about her mission, and even though she has previously shared a ring with the likes of Terri Harper and Natasha Jonas, even she must have been impressed by what she saw, and felt.
Connolly was dropped in the 3rd, but bravely saw the fight out. Connolly has shown her toughness before, she did so again.
Scotney was hugely impressive, her left hand a thing of beauty, it was difficult to believe it was her professional debut.
Eddie Hearn said she will be a world champion in 8 fights, and that looks more than realistic. Scotney is only 22, and it will be interesting how quickly she is moved through the ranks.
Tougher tests will come, but Scotney looks a real star in the making.
