Bellator 243: Chandler vs Henderson Preview

By Dan McConnell

This weekend the Bellator cage return’s to Connecticut with a blockbuster card, as the promotion hopes to build back momentum lost due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This Friday’s event has all the talking points with former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler (20-5) taking on former UFC 155-pound champion Benson Henderson (28-8) in a hotly-anticipated rematch.

Both men first fought at Bellator 165 in 2016, with Chandler having his hand raised by split decision on that occasion.

This is the last fight on Chandler’s contract, and there are whispers he will move on after spending a decade with the promotion. A win would certainly put the ball in his court to test free agency.

Chandler regained his title with a decision victory over Brent Primus in 2018, but later was knocked out by Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire who became a two-weight world champion!

The 34-year old last competed at the Bellator-Rizin cross promotion in December 2019, defeating Sidney Outlaw via a first round knockout!

His oponent Benson ‘Smooth’ Henderson who is renowned for being on the end of Anthony Pettis’ famous showtime kick and holding the UFC lightweight title, has been on a tear of recent times.

Henderson has impressively won four in a row which has more than gone under the radar, and arguably should be fighting for the Bellator lightweight title instead.

Victories over Roger Huerta, Saad Awad, Adam Piccolotti and Myles Jury have given him excellent momentum heading into this rematch. He is hoping to get the loss back after suffering defeat to Chandler first time out.

Also on the card Matt Mitrione takes on Timothy Johnson in a heavyweight scrap. Myles Jury faces Georgi Karakhanyan, and Curtis Millender competes in a catchweight bout v Sabah Homasi.

On the pre-lims the former undefeated talent Adam Borics faces Mike Hamel, and women’s featherweight rising star Valerie Loureda squares off against Tara Graff in an excellent fight night inside the Mohegan Sun venue!
