FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Vicente Luque
By Dan McConnell
The UFC returned to Las Vegas at their UFC Apex complex, for a fight night that didnt look the best on paper due to multiple pullouts and last minute replacements.
Three decision victories in the open three contests didn’t exactly fill me with hope. However, three knockouts, a submission and a fight of the night contest turned this card into a huge sleeper.
Jonathan Martinez pulled off a slick legal knee knockout on the last fight on the prelims to set up an incredible main card!
Bobby Green and Lando Vannata threw down in a huge rematch, that seen a bad-blooded rivalry end and secured a bonus for both who picked up the fight of the night award.
Jennifer Maia quickly dispatched Scotland’s Joanne Calderwood via armbar in the first round, to book her title shot against flweight champion Valentina Schevchenko.
But Vicente Luque stole the show for me. The Brazilian who was born in New Jersey put it on his opponent Randy Brown from the first bell.
A series of sore leg kicks began to take their toll on Brown, who tried to check them but failed. Luque was slick with his standing offense and it looked like a knockout could happen at any moment!
‘The Silent Assassin’ cracked Brown in the second round with a huge knee that dropped him, followed by hailing down punches until the referee waved the contest off.
Vicente Luque has now gone 12-2 with 11 stoppages over his past 14 fights since he made his UFC debut back in 2015.
His only two losses came respectively to Leon Edwards and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Luque is one of the most underrated fighters in the game and certainly deserves a lot more respect.
He has now broken into the top 10 of the welterweight division and in his post-fight interview, called out Nate Diaz in what certainly would be a fight that would be fireworks!
Congratulations to Vicente Luque who is crowned this weeks FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week!
