Two Hall Of Famers Bring Boxing Back To Mexico
By Gary Kittilsen
With Boxing fans all over the world having to endure the quarantine without any boxing to entertain us and occupy our time, some good news is on the horizon.
Two former world champions are teaming up to put on a card on May 23 from Patzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico. It will be the first card to be held in either the US or Mexico, since the Showtime ShoBox card that aired live from the grand Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota back on March 13th and featured Brandun Lee in the main event.
That event was held behind closed doors as will the one on May 23rd. Fortunately for fight fans, It will be streamed live on both YouTube and Facebook!
Former IBF 154 pound champ “King” Carlos Molina and Roy Jones jr Promotions are working together to put together this five-fight event.
For Molina, it’s just the seventh card his promotional company, King Carlos Promotions has ever put on. Molina will not only be promoting the historic event, he will also be fighting in the evening’s main event as well. The former champ said of the event:
“I’m very excited to promote and fight on this event in Patzcuaro. This is the seventh event my promotional company has presented except this time there won’t be any fans in attendance. We’re working with the local commission and taking very strict medical precautions far beyond the typical boxing event to ensure the safety of the fighters, their teams, and the event production staff.”
In the main event the former 154-pound champ Molina will take on Michi ‘El Matador’ Munoz (27-10-1, 18 KOs), of Leon, Mexico in a ten-round affair.
Molina has compiled an impressive record of 31-11-2 (10) and scored upset victories over Ishe Smith, and Kermit Cintron and easily defeated Cory Spinks. He had to settle for draws against Erislandy Lara and Julio Caseasr Chaves Jr, in competitive bouts most that he won and was given a raw deal.
The co-main will feature Eric ‘The Baby-Faced Assassin’ Walker, (20-2, 9 KOs), of Louisiana against Nestor Fernando ‘La Chispa’ Garcia, (23-20-1, 17 KOs), of Queretaro, Mexico in an eight-rounder. Undefeated Roy Jones Jr promoted prospect Shady Gamhour (12-0,9KO’s) of Sweeden, now living and training out of Florida will also be featured on the card. There will be a total of five bouts in all.
