Tony Ferguson Makes Weight Despite The Cancellation of UFC 249

This one may be the most Tony Ferguson thing we’ve seen yet. The former UFC interim lightweight champion was scheduled to headline UFC 249 against first, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and then Justin Gaethje, until the cancellation of the entire event, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

However, that hasn’t prevented the Oxnard all-rounder from tipping the scales at championship weight of 155-pounds.

The 10th. Planet Jiu-Jitsu black belt challenged May 9th opponent Gaethje to join him in the weight-cutting process this afternoon, and despite the Arizonian’s rejection, Ferguson followed through, detailing the process to ESPN MMA on Friday afternoon.

Ferguson, who has amassed a breath-taking twelve fight win streak at 155-pounds, was scheduled to face-off with Nurmagomedov for the fifth time, until the undisputed champion was left stranded in his native Dagestan due to travel restrictions regarding the novel coronavirus pandemic, prevented him from travelling back to the United States.

As mentioned above, Ferguson is expected to headline a UFC event on May 9th against fellow top contender, Justin Gaethje, with interim spoils up for grabs. A victory for ‘El Cucuy’ would make him the sole competitor in UFC history to hold interim gold on two separate. In a move which is guaranteed to draw stark criticism, Ferguson will have to go through the effects of weight-cutting yet again in just over three weeks time.
