UFC 248: Zhang vs Jedrzejczyk Preview
By Jack Rainbow
Arguably the most exciting fight of the night, Weli Zhang vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a huge chance for the victor to jump into superstardom.
The fight for the UFC strawweight crown sees two elite strikers face off, with Jedrzejczyk looking to regain the title she possessed prior to her shock defeat to Rose Namajunas.
In Zhang, however, the UFC has a potential star. The Chinese champion’s popularity opens up a whole region in Asia for the organization to grow in, and her likeability and ability is the perfect blend for her to become one of the faces of women’s MMA.
Her speed and strength make her such a dangerous opponent and there are mouth-watering fights that she can be involved in providing she is able to get the win
Jedrzejczyk though is probably the best strawweight of all time, and showed her best form in quite some time against Michelle Waterson in her last bout.
In a fight week dominated by her struggles to make the 115lbs weight, Jedrzejczyk looked phenomenal, putting on an absolute clinic managing to win all five rounds on two of the judges score-cards.
This, therefore, is an absolute blockbuster. The strawweight division has an unbelievable list of possible contenders, such as Rose Namajunas, Jessica Andrade and Tatiana Suarez.
All match-up brilliantly with either competitor and the winner will definitely be interested in the result of Namajunas vs Andrade 2 , happening in April.
Beating Jedrzejczyk would massively enhance the starpower of Zhang who has spoken frequently about her desire to move up in weight class to challenge Valentina Shevchenko.
That fight would look all the more competitive if Zhang could beat Jedrzejczyk more impressively than Shevchenko did, and it is clear Zhang will seek to make a statement to legitimize her belt.
Stylistically the fight is perfect. Zhang’s Muay Thai style means she has unbelievable weapons from anywhere including powerful elbows and knees.
Jedrzejczyk is technically brilliant and possesses accurate kickboxing, with phenomenal teeps and boxing skills. Both are elite at what they excel in, yet possess different strengths in certain areas of striking, making this fight so stylistically intriguing.
Blending this with what is at stake, makes this a shoe in for fight of the night. Jedrzejczyk is given the chance for an unbelievable comeback, after her two losses to Namajunas and Shevchenko meanwhile Zhang has the opportunity to continue her meteoric rise.
Expect fireworks and striking at the highest level at the pinnacle of one of the most stacked weight-classes in the UFC.
