UFC 246: A Pre-Lim Powerhouse
By Ben Jessop
This Saturday brings us UFC 246 live from the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas and the spotlight, quite rightly, is all over the return of Conor McGregor who is facing down a fan favourite in Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.
Despite a main card littered with big names, from Holly Holm through to Anthony Pettis it was a fight on the prelims that caught my attention and that has the ability to be the fight of the night.
Andre Fili vs Sodiq Yusuff jumps out as a hell of a bout and a huge opportunity for Yusuff who is undefeated in the UFC and on a three fight win-streak having KO’d Gabriel Benitez in the first round back in August 2019.
He’s a fighter who excites fans and has the ability to reach that sacred top fifteen ranking but in the featherweight division, the quest for the top is rife with danger and Andre Fili is no different. People should not underestimate Yusuff’s skillset and with two first round KO’s out of three appearances, Fili will need to be very cautious of Yusuff’s explosiveness.
After making his UFC debut back in 2013, Fili has fought some of the biggest names in the sport such as Max Holloway, Yair Rodriquez, Calvin Kattar and Michael Johnson but having come up short against the big names it’s been hard to him to climb the ladder as far as the rankings are concerned. With his last two fights now in the win column, he’ll be looking to continue his streak and take out another featherweight contender on the climb to the top.
This has all the makings of a great fight, and it’s unlikely to go the distance when you look at both fighter’s resumes. It’s an interesting watch and a real deal breaker on who’s next to begin breaking through.
