UFC 245: Nunes Decisions de Randamie
Amanda Nunes survived her toughest title defence at UFC 245 when she beat Germaine de Randamie in Las Vegas.
The scores of 49-44, 49-46, 49-45 don’t come close to telling the story of the fight.
de Randamie looked like her night would end the same as her first meeting with Nunes in 2013. The expected Nunes onslaught threatened to overwhelm de Randamie, but she survived and left you wondering if the old gas tank problems would resurface for Nunes.
Those thoughts were heightened in the 2nd round when Nunes appeared to be showing signs of real fatigue and was hurt several times, de Randamie won the round and an upset was looking a real possibility.
But Nunes showed her greater versatility, and secured the takedowns needed to safely manoeuvre her to another victory.
Nunes had the toughest fight in her title reign, and despite the Brazilian being 2-0 in their personal rivalry it’s not that hard to imagine another fight between the pair somewhere down the line.
Claressa Shields was in attendance, and the boxing world champion could very well be next. But Shields will know that despite her obvious advantages standing, she will need much more to cross the great divide and add another belt to her collection.
