MMA Fighter of the Week: Rhys McKee

MMA Fighter of the Week: Rhys McKee

By Dan McConnell

This weekend Cage Warriors returned to Ireland, which was 2 years in the making and didn’t disappoint for the fight fans inside the Neptune Arena in Cork.

With a new wave of Irish fighters rising from the underground, this would be an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of home fans. Names such as Rhys McKee, Joe McColgan and Ian Garry all impressively secured first round victories.

It was a tough decision but for his comeback from a career threatening injury and performance on Saturday night, I have decided to select the exciting Rhys ‘Skeletor’ McKee as this weeks’ FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week!

A man who I have interviewed ahead of Cage Warriors return to Ireland, extended his professional MMA record to 10-2-1 in the main event of the evening.

In his first main-event, Rhys McKee secured an impressive first round knockout victory over Håkon Foss and secured his third KO victory in a row.

A man who has certainly matured beyond his years, surely is now set for a welterweight title shot imminently and the opportunity to book a ticket into the UFC.

The former BAMMA lightweight champion sat out for the majority of this year due to a nerve injury in his hand which threatened the longevity of his career. A tough mental and physical year for the 24-year old has finally paid off!

McKee has victories on his record over Richie Smullen, current Cage Warriors lightweight champion Jai Herbert, Jefferson George, Perry Goodwin and now Håkon Foss.

The Ballymena man alongside Ian Garry and Joe McColgan, all scored excellent first round wins on the main-card at CW110, showing the talent on offer throughout the Irish MMA scene.

Cage Warriors President Graham Boylan announced after the event that the promotion will be returning to Ireland for four dates next year. Belfast and Dublin have been suggested as host cities.

I have no doubt that the Northern-Irish man will be headlining the first Belfast card of the year, and hopefully with a Cage Warriors world title shot on the line!
