Niko Price vs James Vick: Welterweight Desperation:
By James Lee
Despite a potential strawweight title eliminator headlining in Tampa this weekend between former champion Joanna Jedzejczyk and Michelle Waterson, a welterweight fight on the preliminary card could have arguably the most important consequences on the card for the competitors.
James Vick vs Niko Price is an exciting fight. Two stand up fighters who both continuously go forward.
What adds intrigue to the fight though is the pressure both are under. Not only inside the octagon, but the stakes to their future in the UFC could depend directly on what happens on Saturday.
In fact, the fight could be James Vick’s most important of his career to date. His welterweight debut and a new chance but also a fight to save his career.
The Texan looked like a promising lightweight contender just 14 months ago, being ranked at number #10 in the division before being knocked unconscious by Justin Gaethje in a Nebraskan main event.
Although he vowed to bounce back, his previous success has been completely undone with him suffering two further losses, with his last being a first-round knockout loss to Dan Hooker.
The welterweight division seems like a last chance for Vick, but he hasn’t been gifted an easy opportunity. A three fight losing streak and a tough opponent ahead.
Niko Price however is a promoter’s dream. Regardless if he wins or losses, he is always involved in exciting fights that end in a finish. Just one of Price’s seventeen professional fights have gone to decision so it is unlikely it will in Florida.
Both men have proved they can compete with some of their respective division’s best but must be able to carry a consecutive win streak now if they want to sustain themselves as a name in the sport.
The pressure is on for both men. Especially James Vick.
Regardless, one thing that guarantees UFC status is excitement. If they can collectively provide that on Saturday, then they will be safe.
