FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Peter Queally
By Dan McConnell
This past weekend Bellator returned for the second time this year to Dublin’s 3 Arena, for a huge night of fights headlined by James ‘The Strabanimal’ Gallagher.
What a night this was and an excellent card overall. We were not short of other MMA action over the weekend with the UFC and Cage Warriors putting on cards also, but it’s from Dublin where we find this week’s MMA Fighter of the Week honours.
A man who I have interviewed in the past, fully deserved his award after an incredible comeback victory and first win inside the Bellator cage.
Peter ‘The Showstopper’ Queally certainly lived up to his name, finishing top contender Ryan Scope in the second round of his contest. But it wasn’t all plain sailing.
His walkout song ‘Zombie by the Cranberries’ got the crazy Irish fans inside the arena going and would set up a crazy turn of events in this fight!
In the first round Queally showed his 17-fight experience getting the upper hand and winning the first out of three rounds.
However, in the second round Queally was caught with an out of nowhere kick to the chin that had him dropped and rocked badly. The Irishman looked in all sorts of trouble but managed to scramble and let his opponent Scope burn himself out, while going hell for leather looking for the finish.
Queally hang in there to defend himself, before amazingly reversing the position. The 155-pounder then took top mount while rocking Scope with an upper cut and hammering punches, before the referee stepped into to wave off the contest. What a crazy turn of events!
The Irish crowd went mental. Queally said after the fight that if he was anywhere else in the world he wouldn’t have been able to survive, the crowd massively helped spur him on!
An amazing comeback for the Irishman had team-mate Conor McGregor jumping for joy. A moment that has been compared to Cathal Pendred’s incredible comeback victory at UFC Dublin back in 2014.
Queally hasn’t had an easy past year loosing on his Bellator debut to Myles Price in February. At the age of 34 ‘The Showstopped’ certainly has a lot left in the tank. For his incredible comeback this is why Peter Queally is this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week!
