FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Khabib Nurmagomedov
Cage Warriors, Bellator and the UFC all had events over the past weekend, so there were many contenders for this week’s MMA Fighter of the Week honours.
Jack Cartwright smashed his way to the Cage Warriors bantamweight title on Friday night, Ian Garry was hugely impressive on the same card. Garry is in the early stages of his MMA career, he proclaims he is the future, he might be right.
But really only man truly stands out, and that man is Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The build up and aftermath for his latest UFC title defence against Dustin Poirier was light years away from that toxic, and at times embarrassing episode with Conor McGregor, although that story looks far from over.
Everything about his main event fight with Poirier at UFC 242 showed the respect and class that was missing from his previous fight.
Poirier had a couple of moments, but Khabib was for the most part dominant over an exceptionally good opponent.
Some call his style boring, but that viewpoint stems from a failure to fully understand the sport, but boring or not his style is highly effective, and one that nobody has yet solved. No fighter is unbeatable, but at the moment it’s difficult to find a fighter who could realistically defeat him.
Khabib stands heads and shoulders above his competition and is this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week.
