Khabib Dominates Poirier at UFC 242
By Matt Wise
Khabib Nurmagomedov retained his UFC lightweight championship belt with a third round submission win over interim champion Dustin Poirier.
The two belt holders were hesitant to engage early on, but Poirier made his mark with a series of leg kicks followed by a high kick which narrowly missed.
Khabib disguised his level change with a left hand before attempting a single leg which had Poirier against the fence. The interim champion spun to get out of initial danger, but Khabib was quick to take Poirier’s back where he smothered his opponent with strikes; as he so often does.
Khabib carried his dominance into the second round, and his ever-present threat of a takedown provided openings to land on the feet. Poirier returned fire though, and had the Russian retreating momentarily.
It was not long before Khabib returned to his wrestling, and he begun taking Poirier down almost at will. Poirier instinctively crawled to the fence but his gas tank was emptying rapidly, allowing Khabib to land more devastating shots.
In round three, Poirier decided to attack a submission to combat Khabib’s takedown, but Khabib calmy freed his neck from the choke. With Poirier’s arms now weak, Khabib timed his submission attack to perfection, and Poirier could not resist the rear naked choke.
With that, the dominant champion moved to an incredible 28-0 professional record, and could now face Tony Ferguson in a long awaited and mouth-watering matchup.
