FightPost Team Predictions: Fury vs Povetkin
By Josh Wooler
Hughie Fury takes on Russia’s Alexander Povetkin tonight in London on the undercard of Vasyl Lomachenko vs Luke Campbell in what is somewhat of a crossroads clash, with both men at opposite ends of their careers.
At 39, Povetkin (34-2, 24KO) has seen better days, however, he still remains one of the top names in the division, if a little below the Tyson Fury’s and the Deontay Wilder’s.
He has also shown he remains dangerous in his last two clashes against David Price and Anthony Joshua – both of which were also on British soil.
Fury (23-2, 13KO), is certainly the fresher of the two men being 15 years younger than his opponent, he also has the skills, height and reach advantage to outbox Povetkin with the jab.
His main concerns should be his lack of power and his questionable appetite for the big occasion, in what could well be his most high-profile fight to date and his Matchroom debut.
I see this fight as a real 50-50 (the FightPost team are evenly split too), but I’m siding with Povetkin to get the job done inside the distance.
I think his experience will allow him to get on the inside and Fury won’t have the power to stop him coming forward. I’m expecting Povetkin to wear Fury down by the mid-late rounds before picking up a stoppage victory.
That being said, there are obviously huge question marks over what Povetkin has left to offer given his age and the fact he has been out of the ring for almost a year following his stoppage loss to Anthony Joshua last September. Therefore, there’d be no surprise were Fury to win – and win comfortably.
