Charlie Edwards vs Julio Cesar Martinez Preview
By Jordan Victor
On Saturday night, we will witness the return of WBC flyweight champion Charlie Edwards. Edwards defends his title against mandatory challenger Julio Cesar Martinez, in what will be the only other world title contest on the Vasyl Lomachenko vs Luke Campbell undercard.
Edwards is fast becoming one of the finest British fighters around today. Edwards has quality wins over the likes of Cristopher Rosales, Angel Moreno and Anthony Nelson in the past year. He is now currently riding a seven fight-win streak that has seen him claim British, continental and world honours in the process.
Far from the fighter who lost to John Riel Casmiero in his first world title challenge at the age of 23. The British public have now seen Edwards evolve in the past three years to one of the best British world champions in recent memory. On Saturday night, he will look to keep his winning streak going as he looks to future fights with the likes of Moruti Mthalane and domestic rival Kal Yafai. But first he must get through one of the divisions best in Julio Martinez.
Martinez recently shocked many in the boxing when he knocked out the previously unbeaten Andrew Selby.
Before the bout many fans had dreamed of an all-British encounter between Edwards and Selby, but Martinez ruined those plans completely, and in doing so he became mandatory challenger for Edwards title.
On the night, Martinez will likely be going in as the underdog once again. With Edwards already looking dead-on for a unification clash with IBF champion Mthalane. But do not be mistaken, Martinez is one of the rising stars at flyweight, and as he showed against Selby he is capable of beating the very best.
