FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Nick Newell
By Dan McConnell
With a whole host of Bellator MMA action inside the Webster Bank Arena in Connecticut, the card had a record 14 finishes that had everything from knockouts to submissions.
From Sergey Kharitonov’s brutal KO over Matt Mitrione in the main-event, Aviv Gozali’s 11 second heel-hook submission and Khonry Gracie winning via armbar in the very first round. Bellator 225 certainly delivered!
This gave me the toughest test to pick who rightfully deserves the FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week award?
The excellent action on the main card stole the show on Saturday night, but it was deep down in the prelims were Bellator debutant Nick Newell’s victory impressed me.
Newell was the former WSOF and LFA lightweight champion, who appeared on the Dana White Contender Series but was denied a contract to sign with the promotion.
Newell is a fighter who wasbborn with one hand, and has continued to defy the odds in the world of mixed martial arts. Simply an incredible story.
On Saturday night Newell extended his run to 16-2, submitting a tried and tested Corey Browning in the very first round. Don’t forget Browning is a man who has derailed the hype train of Kimbo Slice Jr as well as the former reality TV star Aaron Chalmers most recently.
This was no easy task for Newell who would certainly took a step up in competition. But this didn’t stop the top lightweight prospect from making a huge statement!
Receiving a one fight-contract and opportunity of a life time, this was certainly something Newell took full advantage of.
What an inspirational story and one I expect to continue when Mr Scott Coker comes knocking on Nick’s door come Monday morning. Nick Newell has rightfully won the FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week award!
