UFC Newark: Under the Radar

Antonina Shevchenko vs Lucie Pudilova

By James Lee

Saturday night will see the UFC host an event in Newark, New Jersey with a welterweight contender fight between Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler headlining.

With all the attention on the headliner, a female flyweight fight between Antonina Shevchenko and Lucie Pudilova looks promising to grab the headlines from the event and earn the fight of the night honours.

The female 125 lbs division is relatively new to the UFC, but the pair are amongst the most exciting, rising fighters in the division.

The bout is expected to be a back-and-forth striking battle as both women are long-time strikers. Shevchenko has the more extensive kickboxing record but Pudilova has more experience in MMA. The betting odds are close which further adds intrigue to an already intriguing clash.

As Pudilova proved at UFC 228 in her bantamweight fight with Irene Aldana, she has immense toughness, a wide variety of strikes along with being able to keep a high pace for three rounds, Shevchenko has the same.

The bout in Dallas earned plaudits from fans across the world and pushed her on to become a big part of the UFC’s debut in the Czech Republic.

Shevchenko suffered her first professional loss in her last fight, losing a split decision to Roxanne Modafferi. Before that, Shevchenko was looked at as one of the best in the world, alongside her sister and current flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Aside from the motivation to avenge their previous losses, a spot in the rankings will be claimed by the winner, who will go on to put their name forward to climb the 125 lbs division.

The must-see flyweight contest is amongst the preliminary card of the UFC’s trip to Newark, that starts at an early time of 5pm BST.
