FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Jack Hermansson
By Kieran Cobley
This week’s Fighter of the Week goes to Jack Hermansson (19-4), who beat Jacare Souza (26-7, 1NC) on short notice to make a huge jump up the middleweight rankings at UFC Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.
Originally scheduled to be Paulo Costa vs Yoel Romero before a suspension and injury ruled both men out respectively, the main event was changed to Jacare vs Hermansson on only a few weeks notice.
The Joker came into this fight off the back of a three fight win streak, knowing that a win over a marquee name like Souza would fast track him into the world title picture.
It was common knowledge as the fight started that Souza, a BJJ black belt, would be in control if he was able to get the fight to the floor, but he simply couldn’t, and on the off chance he did, he couldn’t do anything to put Hermansson away.
On the feet, it was clear that the Scandinavian fighter was in charge through out the five rounds, as he landed hard hitting combinations, as well as using more pin point technical striking to effectively hit and out point Souza.
The fight went the distance, and Hermansson took a unanimous decision victory, 49-45 48-47 and 48-47.
Where does Hermansson go from here? Well, you’d have to think his next fight would be either a shot at Israel Adesanya for the interim title or Robert Whittaker for the undisputed title, but with those two looking likely to be booked to take each other on soon, that might not be the case.
The only other fight that springs to mind would be against Kelvin Gastelum or Yoel Romero (whoever is healthy and ready to fight) in a title eliminator bout, but then the question is after Gastelum lost to Adesanya and Romero has lost twice to Whittaker, do either of those guys deserve a title eliminator opportunity.
