Bellator Prospect Watch: Juan Archuleta

Bellator Prospect Watch: Juan Archuleta

By Dan Mc Connell

The Bellator Prospect Watch continues as the promotion is about to go through a fun-filled and action packed next few months, with six events taking place starting April 27th through to July the 12th!

The series’ attention will turn to the Bellator featherweight division, with the recent announcement of the Bellator featherweight tournament that will start later this year.

Juan ‘The Spaniard’ Archuleta is currently on a tear through the stacked 145-pound division and has an almost perfect undefeated record at 21-1. The 31-year old who is based in California, is associated with former UFC fighter and his camp Joe Stevenson’s Cobra KAI.

He also had former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, current UFC featherweight veteran Cub Swanson along with Joe Stevenson in his corner for his most recent fight. That’s some corner-team alright!

‘The Spaniard’ has fought for promotions such as World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and King of The Cage (KOTC) going on an undefeated streak of 13 wins in a row. His only loss came via submission at WSOF 19 in March of 2015, on the same card as former WSOF lightweight champion and current UFC title challenger Justin Gaethje.

Archuleta signed for Bellator MMA in 2017 and made his debut in March 2018 at Bellator 195, on the Darrion Caldwell v Leandro Higo card in Oklahoma. The featherweight contender defeated William Joplin via decision in his first fight with his new promotion.
Archuleta has gone undefeated inside the Bellator cage with four victories in a row.

He went on to defeat Robbie Peralta via knockout in the third round, Jeremy Spoon by decision and most recently dropped down to bantamweight to face bright prospect Ricky Bandejas on the Fedor v Ryan Bader finale of the Bellator heavyweight tournament.

For me, this was the moment that Archuleta announced himself on the grand stage, stopping the six-fight win streak of Bandejas. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the 31-year old fight the Bellator bantamweight champion Darrion ‘The Wolf’ Caldwell soon, who hasn’t fought from the Bellator-Rizin cross platformed event in December 2018.

‘The Spaniard’ looks to become the 135-pound champion and also compete in the Bellator featherweight tournament later this year.
