The Irish are Taking Over America for St Paddy’s Day Weekend
By Dan McConnell
This Sunday marks a huge cultural weekend for the Irish nation around the world with St Patrick’s Day on the 17th of March. This year is even more special, as Irish boxing is set to take the US by storm! This weekend we will see the best Irish boxing has to offer in four excellent fights that look to ride the momentum of the Irish wave of support.
First up on Friday night decorated Irish amateur now turned professional Katie Taylor (12-0) looks to continue her unbeaten streak inside the Liacouras Centre, Philadelphia. Taylor is aiming for her third straight women’s lightweight title when she takes on the undefeated WBO champion Rose Volante.
Volante has been in Taylor’s sights for some time and up until now, she had been frustrated in her efforts to line up a fight against either the Brazilian or WBC belt holder Delfine Persoon. The Bray native is eager to join Ryan Burnett and Carl Frampton as the third Irish boxer to accomplish unifying her division.
On the same card undefeated Dubliner Jono ‘King Kong’ Carroll (14-0-1) steps up to face IBF super-featherweight champion in American Tevin Farmer (28-4-1). Carroll will put his undefeated record on the line and hope to take the IBF title away from the grasp of the American to kick-start the Irish celebrations. Irish lightweight John Joe Nevin features on the undercard and looks to extend his unbeaten professional record to 11-0.
On St Patricks Day in the early hours of Sunday morning undefeated featherweight Michael Conlan (10-0) is gearing up to face Mexican Ruben Garcia Hernandez inside The Theatre at Madison Square Garden, New York. The Belfast-boxer will have fought for the third straight year in the US on St Patricks Day and most recently won the vacant WBO inter-continental featherweight title last time out against Jason Cunningham.
Garcia Hernandez (24-3-2, 10 KOs) is unbeaten in his last three fights since his unanimous decision loss to Nonito Donaire in September of 2017 and will certainly be a tough opponent for Conlan to overcome. Also, on the undercard Paddy Barnes will want to bounce back from his devastating body shot loss to former WBC flyweight champion Cristofer Rosales when he takes on American Oscar Mojica.
