Bellator Newcastle ReCap & Results
By Dan McConnell
Bellator MMA held their first fight card on their all-new European series. This week has been described as the biggest week in MMA history in the UK and Ireland due to the promotion’s announcements that Sky Sports and Channel 5 will broadcast their events live.
The main card opened up with Fabian ‘The Assassin’ Edwards who faced Lee ‘The Butcher’ Chadwick. Edwards had brother and current UFC welterweight Leon Edwards in his corner. Fabian opened up his Bellator debut by controlling the distance, dictating the action and taking very little punishment. It wasn’t a classic first round KO performance that we expect from Edwards but certainly showed that he has the cardio to go all three rounds and that he is one of the best prospects in the UK. Edwards won the fight via unanimous decision.
Next up former BAMMA two weight world champion Terry ‘The Dominator’ Brazier made his Bellator debut against Chris Bungard in the lightweight division. Both men tried to land shots and take control of the fight, there was very little difference between both in the first round.
The second round begun and Bungard looked the man who took the advantage, stunningly catching Brazier in a rear naked choke. Brazier will be disappointed loosing his first fight in nine fights, barely able to get much going.
Co-main event time we saw former Geordie Shore reality tv star Aaron ‘The Joker’ Chalmers take on the American Corey Browning who derailed the hype train of Baby Slice and was looking to do the same to Chalmers.
In the first round Chalmers landed a huge right that dropped his opponent but he thought the fight was over and initially walked away. Browning used his wrestling well to recover. Chalmers tried to lock in a guillotine choke but the tough American was able to withstand the pressure, eventually catching the Toon-native in a heel hook in the third, forcing him to tap losing his unbeaten record.
In the main-event Sunderland’s Ryan Scope faced experienced Bellator veteran Patricky Pitbull for a possible number one lightweight contender ranking. All three round where tight and could have went either way, Scope showed enough to show that he had more than enough to compete at the elite level. He was caught with a huge knee that stunned him in the first, but rounds two and three both similarly tight to call. The judges ruled in favour of Pitbull, one round for Scope and two in favour of the veteran via close 29-28 decision.
