FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: “Magic” Marlon Moraes

By Kieran Cobley

Marlon Moraes takes this week’s fighter of the week honours, following his first round submission victory over Raphael Assuncaou at UFC Fortaleza.

This bantamweight clash was a rematch for the pair, who previously did battle in 2017, with Assuncaou coming out the victor that time via split decision.

It appeared “Magic” had learnt his lesson though, and wasn’t prepared to go the distance and tempt a repeat result, instead going all out to get the finish.

The first round started tentatively, with neither man wanting to risk an early barrage, with the pair just throwing the occasional jab.

But, it was after one of these jabs that Moraes took his chance, landing two big right hands on the counter, knocking down his rival, before jumping on top to try finish the fight.

Moraes manged to get to half guard whilst throwing shots, before quickly securing a tight guillotine choke, forcing Assuncao to tap out, before admitting in his post fight interview that the fight wasn’t far off being cancelled as he had diarrhoea for most of fight week.

So, what’s next for Moraes?

Well, after that win, Moraes went 22-5-1 and is on a four fight winning streak, with his last loss being that split decision to Assuncao in 2017, so a bantamweight title shot isn’t out of the question.

But, with the uncertainty surrounding TJ Dillashaw and whether he will defend his 135lbs belt or rematch Henry Cejudo for the flyweight belt, it looks more likely that Moraes will be put up against another top contender, perhaps John Linekar or the winner of Cody Garbrandt versus Pedro Munhoz.

Honourable mentions this week go out to: Jose Aldo and Demian Maia, two legends of the sport who proved that they aren’t done just yet, with both picking up victories within the three rounds.
