MMA Fighter of the Week: Amanda Nunes
By Kieran Cobley
Amanda Nunes takes this week’s MMA Fighter of the Week honour as she decimated Cris “Cyborg” Justino to become the UFC featherweight champion and first ever women’s double champion in UFC history at UFC 232.
Nunes made the jump to 145lbs following a dominant reign as the 135lbs champion, with wins over stars like Ronda Rousey and Raquel Pennington amongst others, but many fans and journalists were sceptical of her moving up a weight division to face Cyborg, who many believed was the greatest womens fighter of all time.
The “Lioness” put all these doubts to bed though, stopping Cyborg in just under a minute, with Cyborg landing minimal strikes, while Nunes landed several deadly combinations.
After the fight it was clear to see how much this win meant to Nunes, as she broke down in tears while celebrating before thanking her team and support network.
Nunes’s next test will be to see if she an defend her latest title, probably against Cyborg due to the length of her reign as champ, with the fight more than likely taking place in Brazil to maximise it’s draw.
Honourable mentions are given to Nathaniel Wood, who bullied Andre Ewell for three straight rounds before locking in a RNC in the last-minute for a submission victory, and Michael Chiesa, who proved his jump to welterweight was the right move to make, as he locked in a horrific looking one-armed kimura in the second round for a submission win over Carlos Condit.
