Is Terrence Crawford vs Amir Khan Close?
By Gary Kittilsen
Amir Khan reported that he is close to agreeing on a $5 million offer to fight current WBO welterweight champ Terence “Bud” Crawford.
The fight would take place March 23rd at Madison Square Garden and would be televised on pay-per-view. Khan said that the bout is ‘there’ for him and noted that he has a few details to iron out with Bob Arum and Top Rank, but went on to say a deal could be done tomorrow.
Khan said of fighting Crawford, who is considered by many to be the pound for pound king,
‘Fighting for The pound for pound title to me would be massive and when will I ever get the chance to fight for it (again)? not only that, when will it be in the welterweight division which it is at the moment,’
Khan last fought in September against Samuel Vargas who he dropped multiple times on his way to taking a wide unanimous in Birmingham and was in heavy negotiations with fellow former welterweight champ Kell Brook.
The fight looked close to being agreed upon by both parties and promoter Eddie Hearn said that the two owed it to the fans, however, when the opportunity to fight Crawford presented itself Khan decided to explore the opportunity and added the Kell Brook matchup will “always be there regardless of the outcome” against Crawford.
Terence Crawford last fought in October and scored a 12th round stoppage in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska over Jose Benavidez Jr. Last week it was reported by several sources that Crawford was close to reaching an agreement with rugged veteran Luis Collazo for the same date and venus as the proposed Khan fight.
When rumours of the Collazo fight surfaced it was met with scrutiny and disapproval by most of the American media and there was a desperate need for a bigger-named opponent. Crawfords team has also confirmed interest in defending their title against Khan.
Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti told ESPN on Monday.
“There have been discussions with Team Khan as well as an offer made and hopefully the fight can be put together,” Top Rank also confirmed the $5Million offer. Arum said of the possibility of the fight. “I would love to do the fight We made a proposal to Amir Khan and we will wait to hear back,”
